Lynda Sauvé and Carol Sampson are counting their sheep, while counting their blessings. The hard-working duo are the creators and operators of the Shepherd’s Watch 100 Mile Market & Café in Arthur, a place where farmers, producers, craftsmen and artisans can get their products to market. And it’s a treasure of local delights.
It largely came about out of necessity, because they too needed a place to get their own products to market. Lynda and Carol also operate Shepherd’s Watch Sheep Dairy Farm, and from it comes their independent line of fresh yogurts, artisan cheeses, milk, meat—and plenty of wool. And the 100 Mile Market blossomed to include others in their community.
The pair is as passionate about community and the benefits that come from working together, as they are about their cheeses and handcrafted wool products. For them, it’s about bringing the country community to the customer in one spot, to offer the homegrown, homemade and home-crafted products that would otherwise take people 100 miles off in all directions to find.
It’s working. Their store has become a landmark for local—in baking, in produce, in sweaters, socks, yarn, and a lot more. Even better, on a summer’s day you can sit on the porch and enjoy the tastes and flavours of all good things homegrown, giving you a recipe to experience the country—right where it should be.
