Farmers’ markets are sprouting up in the rich agricultural lands of Minto. Not surprising.
It’s the place to go if you want to be certain where and how your food is grown. Here’s where you get to meet the people who know what you’re putting on your table.
Two new markets have sprung up in Palmerston and in Harriston—both in the Town of Minto—where all growers are required to be within a 50 km radius of the market.
Palmerston is humming. It’s the sound of people talking as they gradually move from table to table, sipping on coffee and enjoying a fresh muffin. Nestled on the grounds of the Railway Heritage Museum, it’s a congregation of a dozen growers bringing everything from produce to meats, baked goods, honey and preserves—a cornucopia of fresh local food in a unique heritage venue. The park setting includes miniature train rides for adults and kids alike, as well as a splash pad, pool and a restored steam locomotive. It’s a relaxed, fun atmosphere where today’s agriculture meets yesterday’s railroad.
The Harriston Market is conveniently located on the main road through town, which makes it easy to find and stop in—for both locals and visitors. It features 15 growers showcasing fresh veggies, local meats, smoked trout, cheese, maple syrup and crafts. On a summer’s day, there’s no better place to be shopping for freshness than here in the outside air.
Harriston Market, 235 Elora St. S, every Fri starting June 8 to August 31, 3 to 6 pm. Palmerston Market, 158 William St., every Sat starting June 9 to Sept 1, 9 am to Noon.
