It’s an up-close and personal approach to community, and to farming.

At the Ignatius Farm in Guelph,  people can grow their own vegetables and fruit, or have a certified organic harvest grown for them.

As part of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre of Guelph, the farm offers a Community Shared Agriculture Program, where people buy shares to eat fresh produce on a weekly basis from a seasonal selection of over 60 types of vegetables and fruit grown for them throughout the summer and fall. As farm manager Heather Lekx says, “Each time they pick up their harvest, everyone can connect with the farmers and enjoy the land at the farm.” Membership also includes u-pick opportunities.

You may prefer to barter. “That’s done. We take up to eight volunteers to work the fields at least one day a week for 20 weeks, in exchange for weekly produce,” Heather explains. Or you can choose to get your hands dirty in some of this fertile soil: over 130 garden plots are available, from 100 square feet all the way to 2,000.

Situated on over 600 acres of land including wetland and woodlands, the farm is rooted in sharing and relationships. Consider: internships that teach organic production; or the way the community steps up to help in urgent situations, such as pre-frost harvests. And of course, as in any labour of love, there is fun. For this, look no further than the folks volunteering their time as part of the fondly-known, Farm Fitness Team, pictured above.

Ignatius Jesuit Centre is located 1 km north of Guelph and consists of: Ignatius Farm & CSA, Loyola House Retreat & Training Centre, The Plant an Old Growth Forest Project, Orchard Park Office Centre, St. Brigid’s Villa & St. Francis of Assisi Chapel and The Ecology Project.
