It’s a celebration of heritage communities that includes architecture, culture, trails and some secrets...
...a time when Doors Open in a one-day event giving visitors an all-access pass to select heritage landmarks and buildings of special interest.
In its fifth year, Doors Open Fergus and Elora has more than 20 participants providing visitors with a behind the scenes look at both old and new.
Elora’s landmark Knox Presbyterian Church—175 years old this year—began its life as a log church, and was later transformed into the majestic stone structure we see today at the exorbitant cost of $22,000. There is the McQueen House in Fergus, built in 1854, and a 130-acre farm known as Cherry Hill, whose new owners have just finished renovations. The Wellington County Museum and Archives is always a hit with tours of its heritage gardens, and starting at 11 a.m., hikes get underway as part of Trails Open and the Elora Cataract Trailway Association. Victoria Park, after an extensive make-over, offers spectacular views of the Gorge, with steps down to the junction of the Irvine and Grand Rivers.
Also participating in 2012 are select Bed & Breakfasts, historic pubs, grocers—even local broadcasters. “Older Voices” offers up walking tours and historical narrative, while a self-guided Photo Walk of up to 50 photographers will compete to capture everything on “film”!

Passports stamped at five sites have a chance to win an overnight stay courtesy of the Brew House on the Grand. A partnership with Heritage Centre Wellington, Elora Fergus Tourism and Ontario Heritage Trust, Doors Open is a province-wide initiative begun in 2002. Millions have attended.
