Since 2005, Kate Vsetula has been an evangelist for the local food movement, but to farmers throughout this region, she is the face of change.
What began as a round-table discussion about the future of farming blossomed into Kate’s concept to create the Guelph Wellington Local Food Initiative.
Inspired by the Buy Local! Buy Fresh! movement of Foodlink Waterloo, Vsetula decided to bring their mapping concept to Wellington County to promote food sustainability, health and rural economic development. She built her success one farm at a time. This year, the Wellington County Buy Local! Buy Fresh! map will connect people to over 100 local farms, markets, retailers, restaurants and caterers that feature local food. The map represents a great cross-section of farmers, from the small family farms to the larger agricultural producers and the associations that represent them. At the end of the day, what it comes down to is a shared passion to put more local foods on local plates.
Kate often jokes that she doesn’t grow anything, but she is helping to grow the future of agriculture for our community. Her goal? Build strong stakeholder networks and bring consumer awareness to venues around her community. With events like the Wellington Rural Romp and Local Food Networking, she is well on her way to seeing our community harvest the fruits of leadership and collective labour.
