This majestic limestone building has been home to many. Built in 1877 to house the poor, it began as a self-sufficient industrial farm, worked and tended by the very people it sheltered. For 70 years, the Wellington County House of Industry and Refuge provided a home to people who had none. Later, it became a long-term care facility.

Today it is an impressive Museum, and features an award-winning exhibit, aptly called “If These Walls Could Speak”, which tells the stories of the people who lived, worked and died here. New permanent outdoor exhibits include the authentic 1877 barn—now open to the public for the first time (May–October), and the Poor House Cemetery, which is now an all-season interpretive site.

The Wellington County Museum and Archives offers an ever-popular, year-round events program too. Festivities such as Family Day, Harvest Home and the Antique & Classic Car Show vie for attendance with Art Workshops for adults, lectures on heritage gardens or County history, musical performances and artistic exhibitions.

Since 1975, the Museum has tripled its archival storage capacity. What this means, explains Museum and Archive Administrator Janice Hindley, is that “You can get into your family tree or explore the heritage of your home in a facility that has free Wi-Fi, computer workstations and complimentary access to Ancestry.ca while you’re here.” With its peaceful gardens, beautiful grounds, meeting rooms and catering kitchen, this unique hilltop site is a perfect venue for weddings, celebrations and meetings. And because it’s connected by trail to both Elora and Fergus, it’s ideally located for or a picnic, scenic stroll or hike.

Outdoor all-ages activities include butterfly-watching and the annual end-of-summer car show. Visit our website for a full list of events, including Doors Open, Rural Romp, Harvest Home Festival. Weekdays, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Weekends and holidays, 12 to 4 pm. Two venues available for meetings and celebrations.
