Experiences to celebrate

There aren’t many better at throwing a party than the truckers and the Scots. Want proof? Two of the area’s biggest events—the Highland Games and the Fergus Truck Show are here. Both feature outstanding musical guests along with plenty of down-home competition and just plain fun.

Music is a big part of everything that happens in our community. And we have it in all tempos and genres. From great live music to award-winning theatre, the roar of a performance engine to the thunder of real horses, around here we believe that culture is food for the soul and we’re serving it up hot. Dig in!

If theatre’s your flavour, the newly restored Fergus Grand Theatre is just the zing, featuring live performances throughout the year in all its resplendent, historic glory. The Drayton Festival is an outstanding professional theatre company just a short drive from Fergus and Elora, and features award-winning musicals, dramas and comedy plays. Each year, more than 200,000 visitors enjoy the high calibre of talent that these local theatres bring.

Elora Festival

Sweet sounds of voices combine in classical melodies and the rhythmic beats of World Music, and echo through the caverns of the Gorge and flow throughout the village. This is the sound of Elora on a warm summer night. There are stars above, and stars on stage, highlighted this year by internationally renowned tenor Ben Heppner performing with the Elora Festival Singers. Now in its 33rd year, the tradition of bringing the world of music right to our doorstep continues. Once heard, you’ll understand why musicians travel from far and wide to be a part of this amazing musical experience, and why audiences return for multiple performances year after year. There are special events throughout the spring, fall and winter too. Be sure to check the calendar.

Scotland without the Airfare

In August, the tents go up and the excitement around town builds. You can hear bagpipes in the distance and you know it’s time for the annual Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. Kicking off with a Thursday-night downtown parade, it’s one of the best parties of the summer as clans and the curious gather from around the world to enjoy three days of great live music, highland dancing and world-class competition in the Heavy Events, as well as genealogy, guest speakers, camping and more.

Really Big Shiny Trucks

In July, the Fergus Truck Show plays host to the biggest trucking event in all of North America, bringing the industry and the people who rely on it together for an open-air family entertainment weekend like no other. The show is punctuated by the roar of the truck pulls and three days and nights of some of country and rock music’s major headline and tribute acts.

Heritage and Summer-long Events

The spirit of place here is strong, and the telling of it can be found in the Wellington County Museum and Archives. Standing like a hilltop sentinel between Elora and Fergus, it is the jewel of our heritage crown, and a centre for year-round events and exhibitions that take us into the future, celebrating who we are and where we came from. Add to this Mount Forest’s Fireworks Festival complete with Classic Car Show, the Fergus Fall Fair, Hillside Festival in Guelph, and many more, and you have unforgettable getaway opportunities you can take all summer long, just a short drive from wherever you are!
